Give me sense enough to use it.” Volume XXI Brevard College, September 12, 1953 Number 1 TOWN HALL PERFORMERS TO APPEAR HERE Mr. Eliot Dodson Is Nelson & Neal Plan Now With Math Dept. Concert At Brevard Only one addition has been made in the teaching staff of Brevard college for the year of 1953-1954. Mr. Eliot Dodson is replacing Mr. Robert McClintock, who is now in the armed services. Mr. Dodson comes from Colum bia, South Carolina, and is a grad uate of Clemson college, in South Carolina. He will serve in the mathematics department and will teach engineering courses. In ad dition to his duties with the math ematics department, he wUl serve on the publications committee of this college, where he will be con nected with the Clarion. Mr. Dodson and his wife, Betty, will make their home in Brevard. They will reside in an apartment in Ross HaU, adjacent to the cam pus. MR. EHOT DODSON Methodists Will Entertain College Faculty, Students Brevard college students and faculty wUl be honored on Sunday evening at the First Mfeffiodist church. A light supper will be served at 6:30 in the church fellow ship hall, followed by a period of group singing and recognition of guests. The Woman’s Society of Chris tian Service and the Youth Fellow ship are in charge of arrangements, under the direction of Mrs. Robert Melton, the student secretary. The evening’s program will conclude with a worship service at 7:30 in the sanctuary which will feature a sound film “The Land of the Bi ble.” The public is also invited to the worship service. The very popular piano-duo Nel son and Neal will present a con cert at Brevard college on Octo ber 12, only two days after a Town Hall appearance in New York. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Neal, both graduates of the Curtis institute of music in Philadelphia, have been playing as a team since they met the institute, where they were both students. Known as the team of Nelson and Neal, the two have be- some so popular that they ai-e in constant demand aU over the Unit ed States. Perhaps a contributing factor to their success is that they play their favorite “long hair” mu sic, but also insert many lighter and more tuneful numbers. Mrs. Neal is a native of Austra lia. She attended school in the United States on a scholarship ar ranged by Eugene Ormandy, con ductor of the Philadelphia sympho ny orchestra. She studied with Ru dolf Serkin at the Curtis institute. This concert will be the first in a series of programs presented on the Lyceum plan. Following Nel son and Neal will be Miss Sophia Steffen, popular concert soloist. Howard Higgins will present his program, “among the spirits,” on January 11. Final plans for the ap- —Turn To Page Three New Dean Of Women Is Louise Moseley Miss Louise Moseley, head of the women’s athletic department at Brevard college, has been ap pointed as the new dean of women at Brevard. Miss Moseley, better known to the students as “Moz,” has been with Brevard college in connec tion with the athletic department for three years. She coached last year’s girl basketball team, which had a very successful year. She is serving in the position that Mrs. Lee Pylant held last year. Mrs. Pylant is unable to be back at the college this year in her us ual role as mathematics professor. NELSON and NEAL, the Australian-American piano duo per form on their twin pianos. Miss Craig Is Now Stamey Inaugurated In Reidsville, N. C. Before Graduation Miss Marjorie Craig of the Eng lish department of Brevard college is now at her home in Reidsville, North Carolina. Miss Craig’s ad dress is 706 Piedmont street, Reids ville, North Carolina. Miss Craig had served in the English department of Brevard col lege virtually since the foundation of the present day institution. She had the distinction of being the au thor of the soon-to-be-published History of Brevard college. This history covers the period of 100 years since the beginning of the sister colleges. Weaver and Ruther ford. When published, this will be the first complete history of this college. Final Enrollment Remains Incomplete Latest reports indicate that our final enrollment may include ap proximately 185 students. On Mon day there ,were 155 students reg istered and about six more regular students due to arrive within the week. Within the next few days there will be 25 or 30 special students registered, thus bringing the total up far beyond that of last semes ter though the original expected 200 will not be reached. Rutherford College Scene Of Anniversary A couple who have been mar ried as long as the Biblical life span of three score years and ten celebrated their wedding anniver sary at Rutherford college on Au gust 24. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Griffin were married in 1883 at the well-known Rutherford college. Dr. R. L. Aber nathy, founder of the college per formed the ceremony. Rutherford college, now inte grated with Brevard college, is one of the oldest and best known Meth odist colleges in this state. Preceding the graduation exer cises of May 28, 1953, came the inauguration of President R. H. Stamey of Brevard college. Mr. Stamey was completing his first year as president of this college. J.-J. Stevenson, Jr.,, dean of Bre vard college, presided over the meeting and introduced the first speaker, Mayor John A. Ford, of Brevard. Following Mayor Ford, the following people made brief addresses: Dr. J. Lem Stokes, Dr. W. Arthur Kale, Mr. Robert C. Walton, Mr. C. Edward Roy. The special speaker for the event was Bishop Paul N. Garbor of the Richmond district of the Methodist church. Bishop Garbor is a well known preacher, educa tor and writer. His address fol lowed the line of the history of education. The Reverend J. Julian Holmes, pastor of the First Methodist church, of Brevard, closed the event with a benediction. Brevard Instructor Inducted Into Army Professor Robert McClintock,, math teacher at Brevard college for the 1953-1954 term is now Pvt. Robert McClintock of the United' States army. He was inducted into- the field artillery on July 28. Before induction, Mr. McClintock coached math students during the summer session at the Universi^ of South Carolina.
